Most night shifts in care feel isolating and draining. But this isn't most care work. We're looking for someone who's genuinely comfortable working alone overnight, who has the calm presence to be the reassuring adult young people trust when the world goes quiet, and who wants to be part of a small, family-run team that actually values what you do
Picture this: it's 11pm. You've settled into the comfortable staff room of a home in Gloucestershire where six young people aged 16 - 18 are safe, settled and sleeping soundly. You're the only adult on site, and that matters deeply. These are young people who've had nowhere else to go - no family home waiting. Your presence overnight tells them something crucial: they are safe, they are worth protecting, and someone reliable is thinking about them while they sleep. You're not just a body in the building. You're the trustworthy adult who checks they're home, who listens if they need to talk, who makes the calm decision if something unexpected happens at 3am
This is a small, family-run organisation that genuinely knows its people - staff and young people alike. You won't be a number here. You'll work bank shifts, which means flexibility and choice about which nights suit your life. The training they provide is real, not a tick-box. And when you're awake supporting a young person through a crisis or a difficulty - helping them problem-solve, keeping things steady - you're paid hourly for that work. £80.19 for the sleep-in, plus £13.46 per hour for active support. That matters, because your skill and presence during those hours matter
The handover to day staff each morning is part of the craft of this role. Clear, accurate records mean the team understands what happened overnight - what mood someone was in, whether there were any concerns, what worked well. You're the bridge between night and day, making sure continuity of care is seamless. It's small-scale, purposeful work that directly shapes the safety and stability these young people experience
What you will be doing
- Be the responsible, reassuring adult on site overnight - working alone in one of the home's locations
- Check that young people have returned safely in the evening and follow up if anyone is missing
- Keep the house secure and ensure the safety and wellbeing of young people while they sleep
- Provide calm, practical support if a young person needs help during the night (paid hourly when this happens)
- Complete clear, accurate records and hand over key information to day staff each morning
Why you will love working here
- £80.19 per sleep-in shift, plus £13.46 per hour for any active support work you do during the night
- Bank shifts - you choose which nights suit your life, not locked into a rigid rota
- Full training provided, with ongoing support from a team that actually knows you
- Work for a small, family-run organisation where staff and young people are genuinely valued
Is this you?
- Are you genuinely comfortable working alone overnight - not anxious about it, but genuinely okay with your own company and the responsibility that comes with it?
- Do you have a calm presence and the confidence to make good decisions if something unexpected happens in the middle of the night?
- Are you organised, with solid written and IT skills so you can keep accurate records that the team relies on?
- Is building positive, professional relationships with young people something that feels natural to you - are you friendly and approachable without losing the professional boundary?
- Can you be flexible? Some nights will be quiet; others will need hands-on support. Both matter equally
- Experience working with young people or in a safeguarding role is a real bonus - but the right attitude and genuine enthusiasm matter more than a CV full of qualifications. We'll train you
