Most care settings treat education as an afterthought. This one puts it at the absolute heart of everything they do, and they need someone who believes that every young person deserves a real chance to learn and progress. You'll be working in a supported accommodation home where education isn't a tick-box: it's woven into daily life. Some young people arrive having been out of school for months or even years. Your job is to meet them where they are, rebuild their confidence, and create a pathway back to mainstream education or college. You might deliver one-to-one tutoring, co-ordinate with external schools and PRUs, or work alongside residential staff to make learning feel natural and achievable again
The whole team here is trained to understand the barriers these young people face. You won't be isolated in a classroom or struggling alone. Residential staff, your line manager, and the Learning Support Team all back you up, and you'll work in genuine partnership with carers, agencies and families. When a young person has special educational needs, you'll advocate fiercely for their right to proper formal education - at least 25 hours a week - and you'll help escalate concerns so they actually get the support they deserve
This is work that builds ambition. The home celebrates every achievement, no matter how small, and staff here actively expect young people to progress and succeed. You'll see young people re-engage with learning, move back into mainstream school, or discover new confidence in themselves. That's the real reward: watching someone who'd given up on education start to believe they can do it
What you will be doing
- Deliver educational input at the right level for each young person - whether that's sessional tutoring, support with online learning, or liaison with external schools and colleges
- Work with the young person and their school or college to plan and facilitate their return to mainstream education, or to a pupil referral unit, wherever that's possible
- Help identify when a young person is underachieving and feed into early intervention plans to get them back on track
- Ensure every young person gets a full and purposeful day: education where appropriate, plus meaningful activities inside and outside the home
- Support the whole-home approach to education by working alongside residential staff, carers and other professionals to remove barriers to learning
- Advocate robustly for the right to formal education, escalating concerns about SEN provision and educational entitlements through the placing authority
