Most teaching jobs ask you to manage big classes and tick boxes. This one asks you to do something rarer: help children who've been through real trauma fall back in love with learning, and watch them rebuild their futures. You'll teach small groups of up to eight, work alongside therapists and carers who genuinely understand each child's story, and be part of a team that's been doing this with measurable impact since 1948
Picture a classroom where eight children know they're safe. You're not battling behaviour or fighting for attention. Instead, you're planning lessons that meet each child exactly where they are, using strategies that work because you understand not just what they need to learn, but what they need to feel. Your teaching assistants have your back. Your wider team - therapists, carers, managers - all know these kids and want the same thing you do
This isn't education bolted onto care. It's woven together. When a child has a breakthrough in your lesson, the whole community celebrates it. When they're struggling, you're not alone - you sit down with colleagues across therapy and education to figure out what they actually need. You'll assess progress, track development, lead on curriculum areas you care about, and watch children transform because they finally have adults who see their potential
You'll work Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00, which means your weekends are yours. The home invests in you: teachers' pension, enhanced parental leave, subsidised meals, and a proper commitment to your professional development and wellbeing. This is a permanent, full-time role where you're valued as part of the family, not a contractor passing through
What you will be doing
- Plan and deliver lessons, group activities and one-to-one interventions tailored to each child's individual needs and learning style
- Lead your classroom team and teaching assistants to create a positive, structured environment where traumatised children feel secure enough to learn
- Assess pupil progress, record outcomes and report on development - linking learning gains to emotional wellbeing
- Work closely with the therapy and care teams in meetings, reviews and supervision to support each child holistically
- Contribute to curriculum development, take on subject leadership, and reflect on your own practice to keep improving
- Play an active part in safeguarding, whole-school events, trips and the wider community life of the home
Why you will love working here
- Teachers' pension and enhanced parental leave - because your future matters as much as theirs
- Subsidised meals and a comprehensive range of wellbeing support, both formal and informal, because burnout helps nobody
- Work in a home with a genuine track record: therapeutic community since 1948, with a reputation for actually transforming lives affected by childhood trauma
- A small-group teaching model (up to eight children) where you can teach with impact, not just manage behaviour
- A multidisciplinary team - therapists, carers, managers - who all know your pupils and support your work, plus real supervision and continuous professional development
Is this you?
- You hold Qualified Teacher Status and have at least three years' experience teaching primary-aged children
- You've worked with children with special educational needs and understand trauma-informed practice - or you're genuinely committed to learning it
- You know the National Curriculum (KS1 and KS2), can use varied teaching strategies, and are confident with assessment for learning and progress tracking
- You're patient, resilient, a good listener and someone who reflects on what works - you build real relationships with children and colleagues
- You're comfortable using ICT to support learning and you understand safeguarding and child protection
