Most SEMH teaching roles leave you exhausted, undervalued, and wondering if you're actually making a difference. This one doesn't. We're looking for a qualified English teacher who's ready to lead a department, shape how vulnerable young people aged 7 to 18 learn to read and write, and join a senior team that genuinely invests in your growth

Picture yourself in a role where your English expertise actually counts. You're not just delivering lessons to kids who've been written off by the system. You're using proven intervention strategies, running phonics and literacy programmes tailored to each young person's needs, and watching barriers to learning crumble. The school uses a 'Turning the Curve' model that works, and you'll be at the heart of it, supporting pupils through Individual Learning Plans, EHCP reviews, and PEP meetings where your voice shapes their future

As English lead, you get to build something. You'll upskill and train the team around you, oversee reading strategies across the school, and contribute to a nurturing environment where kids with SEND and SEMH needs actually want to come to lessons. This is a permanent, full-time role with core hours of 8:30am to 4:40pm, Monday to Friday, which means you have time to live your life outside the classroom

The team here promotes over 100 colleagues every year. That's not an accident. This provider genuinely believes in career development, and a subject lead role is your platform. You'll get comprehensive paid induction, ongoing training, and access to senior staff who've walked the path themselves. The pension scheme is double-matched up to 20% (that's a 30% total contribution), there's life insurance at 4 times your salary, and you can stay free at a Peak District holiday home whenever you need to breathe

What you will be doing

  • Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons tailored to the individual needs of young people aged 7 to 18 with SEND and SEMH
  • Lead the English department, upskilling and training staff across the school
  • Deliver phonics and literacy interventions, oversee reading strategies, and ensure baseline assessments are completed
  • Support pupils' academic and personal development through Individual Learning Plans, EHCP reviews, and PEP meetings
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where safeguarding and wellbeing are non-negotiable

Why you will love working here

  • Salary of £41,137 plus £3,000 subject lead allowance, with a pension scheme that matches your contributions double, up to 30% total
  • Permanent full-time contract with core hours 8:30am to 4:40pm, Monday to Friday, plus company sick pay and life insurance worth 4 times your salary
  • Free access to a Peak District holiday home, a cycle to work scheme, green hybrid and EV car scheme, and £500 refer-a-friend bonus
  • Comprehensive paid induction, ongoing training, and a workplace culture where over 100 colleagues were promoted last year
  • Access to 24/7 Online GP, employee discounts via E-Together, monthly recognition awards, and the genuine chance to transform a child's life

Is this you?

  • Are you a qualified teacher with QTS and a relevant degree, with at least 2 years of post-graduation experience?
  • Do you have strong understanding of SEND and SEMH, plus knowledge of assessment frameworks and progress tracking?
  • Can you manage behaviour brilliantly and teach with genuine inclusion at your core?
  • Have you led a department before, or acted in a leadership role? (It's desirable, and we'd love to hear about it.)
  • Are you flexible enough to support other subjects as the team grows, and committed to safeguarding above all else?
