Most SEND teaching roles ask you to manage behaviour and tick boxes. This one asks you to unlock potential in young people who've been failed by the system, and gives you the space, the team and the training to actually do it. If you're burnt out by mainstream schools or tired of being under-resourced, read on
Imagine walking into a small independent school where every single student has been hand-picked because they need something different - not a punishment, but a second chance. This isn't a packed classroom where SEND gets squeezed in between 30 others. You're teaching young people with complex needs and challenging behaviours who've previously struggled to access education at all. Your job is to see the person behind the behaviour and design a learning route that actually fits them
The curriculum here is nothing like you've taught before. Yes, there are GCSEs and BTECs and functional skills qualifications on offer - proper, recognised pathways. But there's also water sports, mountain biking, archery and horse-riding woven into the week. These aren't soft extras; they're part of how young people rebuild confidence and discover they're capable of more than they thought. You'll work as a generalist teacher, which means you're not siloed in one subject - you're building relationships and personalising learning across the breadth of what the school offers
The team here actually lives the EPIC values they talk about. You'll work collaboratively, you'll be supported to model professional integrity, and you'll have access to fully funded training and qualifications to keep growing. The school is small enough that leadership knows your name and what you need, but big enough that you're not carrying the weight alone. This is the kind of place where your experience in SEND or similar provision isn't just ticked off on a form - it's genuinely valued and built upon
