Picture yourself on shift: you're co-ordinating the daily rhythm of a children's home, building trust with young people who've had rough starts, and using your own skills and experience to open doors for them. You're not just supervising; you're actively involved in their care plans, their routines, their contact with family. That's the substance of this role. You'll work shifts that include evenings, weekends and bank holidays on a rota system, and sleep-in duties when needed, because this is real work with real young people who need consistency and presence
You'll be part of a residential team where everyone maintains high therapeutic standards together. The Registered Manager will have your back, you'll get regular supervision, and you'll be in team meetings and training sessions where the home actively develops its practice. This isn't a placement where you're left to figure it out alone. You're supporting young people in their personal spaces and the communal areas, handling the domestic side of their lives, fostering family contact where it matters, and liaising with social workers and other professionals who care about these kids
The home operates within clear legal parameters and established policies. You'll maintain detailed case file records, write incident forms and daily logs, manage money when needed, and handle the administrative side that keeps everything running safely. You might need to physically intervene if a young person's behaviour is dangerous, but you'll do that within procedural guidelines and with the support of a team that knows what it's doing. This is honest, structured, protective work
What you will be doing
- Be part of the residential care team on shift, delivering safe and warm care while maintaining therapeutic practice with a group of diverse young people
- Co-ordinate the daily routine of the home, managing household duties, cleanliness standards, and the smooth running of the establishment when you're on shift
- Participate actively in care planning and its implementation, maintaining detailed case file records, incident forms, daily logs and handovers that keep everyone informed
- Support young people in all aspects of their personal space and communal living, from domestic tasks to family contact, whilst demonstrating both sensitivity and appropriate assertiveness
- Work alongside the Registered Manager in the operational management of the home, ensuring policies and procedures are followed and contributing to the development of best practice
- Attend supervision sessions, team meetings and required training, and be willing to undertake sleeping-in duties on a rota basis as part of full-time residential work
